English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr (رضي الله عنهما) — via Ya'qub, from his father, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, from 'Amr ibn Shu'ayb, from his father, from his grandfather 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr — that the delegation of Hawazin came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at al-Ji'rrana after they had accepted Islam. They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, we are a people of lineage and kinship, and a calamity has befallen us that is not hidden from you — so be gracious to us as Allah has been gracious to you.' the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Are your children and women more beloved to you, or your wealth?' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, you have given us a choice between our honor and our wealth. Rather — return our women and children to us, for that is more beloved to us.' He said to them: 'As for what belongs to me and Banu 'Abd al-Muttalib — it is yours. When I lead the people in Dhuhr prayer, stand up and say: "We seek intercession through the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with the Muslims, and through the Muslims with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, for [the return of] our children and women." I will then give you and ask on your behalf.' When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ led the people in Dhuhr, they stood and said what he had instructed them. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'As for what belongs to me and Banu 'Abd al-Muttalib — it is yours.' The Muhajirun said: 'What belongs to us is [also given] for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' The Ansar said: 'What belongs to us is [also given] for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' Al-Aqra' ibn Habis said: 'As for me and Banu Tamim — no.' 'Uyayna ibn Hisn ibn Hudhayfa ibn Badr said: 'As for me and Banu Fazara — no.' 'Abbas ibn Mirdas said: 'As for me and Banu Sulaym — no.' Banu Sulaym said: 'No — what belongs to us is [given] for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' 'Abbas said: 'O Banu Sulaym, you have undermined my position!' the Prophet ﷺ said: 'As for whoever among you holds onto his rightful share of these captives — for each person [he releases], he will receive six young camels from the first booty we obtain.' And the people returned the children and women [of Hawazin] to them.
