English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As (رضي الله عنهما) — via Ya'qub, from his father, from Ibn Ishaq, from Abu 'Ubayda ibn Muhammad ibn 'Ammar ibn Yasir, from Miqsam Abu al-Qasim the freed slave of 'Abdullah ibn al-Harith ibn Nawfal — who said: 'I and Talid ibn Kilab al-Laythi went out until we came to 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As while he was circumambulating the House with his sandals hanging from his hand. We said to him: "Were you present with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when the man from [Banu] Tamim spoke to him on the Day of Hunayn?" He said: "Yes. A man from Banu Tamim called Dhu al-Khuwaysira came and stood before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was distributing [wealth to people]. He said: 'O Muhammad, I have seen what you have done today.' the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Indeed — and how do you see it?' He said: 'I do not see that you have been just.' the Messenger of Allah ﷺ became angry, then said: 'Woe to you! If justice is not with me, then with whom?' 'Umar ibn al-Khattab said: 'O Messenger of Allah, shall we not kill him?' He said: 'No — leave him. He will have followers who will go so deep into religion that they will exit it just as an arrow exits its target. When the arrowhead is examined — nothing [of the target] is found. When the shaft is examined — nothing is found. When the nock is examined — nothing is found. It has passed through the filth and blood [of the target] without anything clinging to it.'" [Abu 'Abd al-Rahman said: Abu 'Ubayda — whose name is Muhammad — is trustworthy. And his brother Salama ibn Muhammad ibn 'Ammar is only reported from by 'Ali ibn Zayd, and his reliability is unknown to us. Miqsam is acceptable. This hadith has various chains with this meaning, and other chains for this meaning that are authentic — and Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) knows best.]'
