English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr (رضي الله عنهما) — via Sa'id ibn Mansur, from Ya'qub ibn 'Abd al-Rahman, from Abu Hazim, from 'Umara ibn 'Amr ibn Hazm — that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'A time will soon come when people will be sifted like a sieve, and what will remain will be the dregs of humanity: their covenants and trusts will have become muddled, and they will be like this' — and he interlaced his fingers. They said: 'What should we do, O Messenger of Allah, when that comes?' He said: 'Take what you recognize [as right] and leave what you disapprove of. Turn to your own [private] affairs and leave the affairs of the general public.' [Also narrated via Qutayba ibn Sa'id with the same chain and meaning — except that he said: 'dregs of people will remain' and 'leave the affairs of the general public.']
