English Translation
It was narrated from Abu Hurayra (رضي الله عنه) — via Sufyan, from Isma'il ibn Umayya, from Abu Muhammad ibn 'Amr ibn Hurayth al-'Udhri [and on another occasion: from Abu 'Amr ibn Muhammad ibn Hurayth, from his grandfather] — who said: I heard Abu Hurayra say: Abu al-Qasim (ﷺ) said: 'When one of you prays, let him place something in front of his face [as a sutrah]. If he finds nothing, let him set up a stick. If he has no stick, let him draw a line on the ground — and whatever passes in front of him thereafter will not harm him.' [A second chain confirms the same meaning via Sufyan from Isma'il ibn Umayya, from Abu 'Amr ibn Hurayth, from his father, from Abu Hurayra, traced to the Prophet ﷺ. And 'Abd al-Razzaq reported it from Ma'mar and al-Thawri, from Isma'il ibn Umayya, from Abu 'Amr ibn Hurayth, from his father, from Abu Hurayra, traced to the Prophet ﷺ.]
