English Translation
It was narrated from Abu Hurayra (رضي الله عنه) — via Isma'il, from al-Qasim ibn Mihran, from Abu Rafi' — that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw phlegm [nukhaama] on the qibla wall of the mosque. He turned to the people and said: 'What is the matter with one of you — he stands facing his Lord and spits [yatanakhkha'] in front of Him? Does any of you wish to face someone and have them spit in his face? When one of you spits, let him spit to his left or under his foot. If he cannot, let him spit like this into his garment.' Al-Qasim demonstrated: he spat into his garment, then rubbed one part of it against another.
