English Translation
It was narrated from Abu Hurayra (رضي الله عنه) — via Muhammad ibn Fudayl, from 'Umara — and from Jarir, also from 'Umara — from Abu Zur'a — that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when he made the opening takbir in prayer, would pause between the takbir and the recitation. I [Abu Hurayra] said: 'May my father and mother be your ransom — tell me about this pause between the takbir and the recitation. What do you say?' He said: 'I say: "Allahumma ba'id bayni wa bayna khatayaya kama ba'adta bayna al-mashriqi wa al-maghrib. Allahumma naqqini min khatayaya kama al-thawb al-abyad min al-danas" — Jarir [adds]: "kama yunaqqqa al-thawb" — "Allahumma ighsilni min khatayaya bil-thalji wal-ma'i wal-barad."' [O Allah, distance me from my sins as You have distanced the East from the West. O Allah, cleanse me of my sins as a white garment is cleansed of filth. O Allah, wash me of my sins with snow, water, and hail.] [Ahmad adds: All the hadiths in this chain are from Abu Zur'a — except this one, which is from Abu Salih.]
