English Translation

It was narrated from Abu Hurayra (رضي الله عنه) — via 'Abd al-Razzaq and Ibn Bakr → Ibn Jurayj → 'Ata' → Abu Salih al-Zayat — that he heard Abu Hurayra say — that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Every deed of the son of Adam is for him — except fasting, for it is Mine and I give the reward for it. Fasting is a shield [junnah]. When it is a day that one of you is fasting, let him not engage in obscene speech [rafath] that day, nor act quarrelsomely [yaskhabu]. If someone curses him or fights him, let him say: "I am a fasting person" — twice. By the One in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad — the breath of the fasting person's mouth is more pleasing to Allah on the Day of Resurrection than the scent of musk. The fasting person has two joys he rejoices in: when he breaks his fast, he rejoices at the breaking of his fast; and when he meets his Lord (عز وجل), he rejoices at his fasting.'
