English Translation

It was narrated from Abu Hurayra (رضي الله عنه) — via 'Abd al-A'la, from Ma'mar, from al-Zuhri, from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab — that a man from Banu Fazara came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'O Prophet of Allah, my wife has given birth to a black boy' — as if suggesting he wished to disown him [deny paternity]. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: 'Do you have camels?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'What color are they?' He said: 'Red.' He said: 'Are there among them any gray-dun [awraq] ones?' He said: 'Yes, there are some gray ones.' He said: 'How did that come about?' He said: 'Perhaps a gene [inheritable trait, 'irq] brought it out.' the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'And this [child] — perhaps a gene brought it out.' [Also narrated via Yazid, from Ibn Abi Dhi'b, from al-Zuhri, from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab, from Abu Hurayra: A Bedouin from Banu Fazara called out to the Prophet ﷺ saying: 'My wife has given birth to a black boy' — and he mentioned the same meaning.]
