حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ مَالِكٍ عَنْ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ عَنِ الْأَعْرَجِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى

اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِيَّاكُمْ وَالْوِصَالَ كَذَاكَ عِلْمِي قَالُوا إِنَّكَ تُوَاصِلُ قَالَ إِنِّي لَسْتُ كَأَحَدِكُمْ إِنِّي أَبِيتُ يُطْعِمُنِي رَبِّي وَيَسْقِينِي

English Translation

It was narrated from Abu Hurayra (رضي الله عنه) — via 'Abd al-Rahman, from Malik, from Abu al-Zinad, from al-A'raj — that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Beware of al-wisal [continuous fasting without breaking]! Such is my knowledge [of its hardship].' They said: 'But you yourself practice wisal.' He said: 'I am not like any of you — I spend the night with my Lord feeding me and giving me drink.'
