English Translation
It was narrated from Abu Hurayra (رضي الله عنه) — via Yazid, from Ibn Abi Dhi'b, from al-Zuhri, from Abu Salama — that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when he attended a funeral, would ask: 'Does your companion have any debt?' If they said yes, he would ask: 'Does he have anything to pay it off?' If they said yes, he would pray over him. If they said no, he would say: 'Pray over your companion.' When Allah (عز وجل) granted him conquests, he said: 'I am closer to the believers than they are to themselves. Whoever dies leaving debt, it is upon me. Whoever leaves wealth, it is for his heirs.'"
