English Translation

It was narrated from Abu Hurayra (رضي الله عنه) — via Sulayman ibn Dawud al-Hashimi, from Ibrahim ibn Sa'd, from Ibn Shihab, from 'Ata' ibn Yazid — that the people said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: 'O Messenger of Allah, shall we see our Lord (عز وجل) on the Day of Resurrection?' He said: 'Do you have difficulty seeing the full moon on a clear night?' They said: 'No.' He said: 'Do you have difficulty seeing the sun when there are no clouds?' They said: 'No.' He said: 'You will see Him just like that. Allah will gather the people on the Day of Resurrection and it will be said: Whoever used to worship something, let him follow it. Those who worshipped the sun will follow the sun, those who worshipped the moon will follow the moon, and those who worshipped idols will follow the idols. This Umma will remain, including its intercessors — or its hypocrites. Then Allah (عز وجل) will come to them in a form other than the one they recognize and say: I am your Lord. They will say: We seek refuge in Allah from you. This is our place until our Lord comes. When our Lord comes, we will recognize Him. Then Allah (عز وجل) will come in the form they recognize and say: I am your Lord. They will say: You are our Lord, and they will follow Him. The Sirat will be set over the midst of Hellfire. I and my Umma will be the first to cross it. Only the Messengers will speak that Day, and the supplication of the Messengers that Day will be: O Allah, save us, save us! In Hellfire there are hooks like the thorns of the sa'dan plant. Have you seen the sa'dan plant?' They said: 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'They are like the thorns of the sa'dan, except that none knows their size but Allah. They snatch people according to their deeds. Among them are those destroyed by their deeds, those bound by their deeds, and those cut to pieces, and among them are those who pass through. Then when Allah (عز وجل) finishes judging between the servants and wills to bring out of the Fire by His mercy those who said La ilaha illa Allah, He will command the angels to bring out of the Fire those who never associated anything with Allah — those whom Allah wills to have mercy on, those who say La ilaha illa Allah. They will recognize them in the Fire by the marks of prostration. The Fire consumes the son of Adam except the marks of prostration; Allah (عز وجل) has forbidden the Fire from consuming the marks of prostration. They will come out of the Fire completely charred. The water of life will be poured over them and they will sprout like a seed sprouts in the silt carried by a flood. One man will remain with his face toward the Fire, the last of the people of Paradise to enter it. He will say: O Lord, turn my face away from the Fire, for its stench has poisoned me and its smoke has burned me. He will call upon Allah as long as Allah wills, then Allah (عز وجل) will say: If I do that for you, will you ask for anything else? He will say: No, by Your might, I will not ask for anything else, and he will give his Lord whatever covenants He wills. Allah will turn his face from the Fire. When he faces Paradise and sees it, he will be silent as long as Allah wills, then say: O Lord, bring me closer to the gate of Paradise. Allah (عز وجل) will say: Did you not give your covenants not to ask for anything beyond what I gave you? Woe to you, O son of Adam, how treacherous you are! He will say: O Lord! and will call upon Allah until He says: If I grant you that, will you ask for anything else? He will say: No, by Your might, and will give his Lord whatever covenants He wills. He will be brought to the gate of Paradise. When he stands at the gate of Paradise, it will open before him and he will see the joy and delight within it. He will be silent as long as Allah wills, then say: O Lord, admit me to Paradise. Allah (عز وجل) will say: Did you not give your covenants not to ask for anything beyond what I gave you? Woe to you, O son of Adam, how treacherous you are! He will say: O Lord, let me not be the most wretched of Your creation. He will keep calling upon Allah until Allah laughs at him. When Allah (عز وجل) laughs at him, He will say: Enter Paradise. When he enters, Allah (عز وجل) will say: Make a wish. He will ask his Lord and wish until Allah Himself reminds him, saying: Ask for such-and-such. When his wishes are exhausted, Allah (عز وجل) will say: You shall have all of that and the like of it with it.' 'Ata' ibn Yazid said: Abu Sa'id al-Khudri was with Abu Hurayra and did not object to any of his narration until Abu Hurayra reported that Allah (عز وجل) said to that man: 'and the like of it with it.' Abu Sa'id said: 'And ten times the like of it, O Abu Hurayra!' Abu Hurayra said: 'I only memorized: that is yours and the like of it with it.' Abu Sa'id said: 'I bear witness that I memorized from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ his saying about that man: You shall have ten times the like of it.' Abu Hurayra said: 'That man is the last of the people of Paradise to enter it.'"
