Hadith #448

English Translation

Hashim ibn al-Qasim narrated to us, he said: 'Abd al-Hamid, meaning Ibn Bahram, narrated to us, he said: Shahr ibn Hawshab narrated to us, he said: Abu Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه) said: Once there was a man and his wife in earlier times who could not afford anything. The man returned from a journey and came to his wife hungry, suffering from severe exhaustion. He said to his wife: "Do you have anything?" She said: "Yes, rejoice! Allah's provision has come to you." He urged her, saying: "Woe to you, bring it if you have something!" She said: "Yes, just a little while — we hope for Allah's mercy." When his hunger prolonged, he said: "Woe to you, get up and bring it if you have bread, for I am exhausted and spent." She said: "Yes, now the oven is getting hot, so do not rush." When he was quiet for a while, and she also anticipated he would speak again, she said to herself: "Let me go look at my oven." She got up and found her oven full of sides of lamb, and her millstones were grinding by themselves. She went to the millstone and shook it to stop it, and took out what was in the oven of lamb sides. Abu Hurayrah said: "By the One in Whose Hand is the soul of Abu al-Qasim, on the authority of Muhammad ﷺ: had she taken what was in her millstones without shaking them to stop, they would have kept grinding until the Day of Resurrection."
