Hadith #213

وَبِإِسْنَادِهِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ لَمَّا فُتِحَتْ خَيْبَرُ أُهْدِيَتْ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ شَاةٌ فِيهَا سُمٌّ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ اجْمَعُوا لِي مَنْ كَانَ هَاهُنَا مِنْ الْيَهُودِ فَجَمَعُوا لَهُ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنِّي سَائِلُكُمْ عَنْ شَيْءٍ فَهَلْ أَنْتُمْ صَادِقِيَّ عَنْهُ قَالُوا نَعَمْ يَا أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ أَبُوكُمْ قَالُوا أَبُونَا فُلَانٌ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَذَبْتُمْ أَبُوكُمْ فُلَانٌ قَالُوا صَدَقْتَ وَبَرَرْتَ قَالَ لَهُمْ هَلْ أَنْتُمْ صَادِقِيَّ عَنْ شَيْءٍ سَأَلْتُكُمْ عَنْهُ قَالُوا نَعَمْ يَا أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ وَإِنْ كَذَبْنَاكَ عَرَفْتَ كَذِبَنَا كَمَا عَرَفْتَهُ فِي أَبِينَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ أَهْلُ النَّارِ قَالُوا نَكُونُ فِيهَا يَسِيرًا ثُمَّ تَخْلُفُونَنَا فِيهَا فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَا نَخْلُفُكُمْ فِيهَا أَبَدًا ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُمْ هَلْ أَنْتُمْ صَادِقِيَّ عَنْ شَيْءٍ سَأَلْتُكُمْ عَنْهُ فَقَالُوا نَعَمْ يَا أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ فَ
قَالَ هَلْ جَعَلْتُمْ فِي هَذِهِ الشَّاةِ سُمًّا قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ فَمَا حَمَلَكُمْ عَلَى ذَلِكَ قَالُوا أَرَدْنَا إِنْ كُنْتَ كَاذِبًا نَسْتَرِيحُ مِنْكَ وَإِنْ كُنْتَ نَبِيًّا لَمْ تَضُرَّكَ

English Translation
With the same chain of narration, from Abu Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه) who said: When Khaybar was conquered, a poisoned sheep was presented as a gift to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Gather for me whoever is here from the Jews." They were gathered, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them: "I am going to ask you about something; will you be truthful with me?" They said: "Yes, O Abu al-Qasim." He said: "Who is your father?" They said: "Our father is so-and-so." the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "You have lied; your father is so-and-so." They said: "You have spoken the truth and been righteous." He said to them: "Will you be truthful with me about something I ask you?" They said: "Yes, O Abu al-Qasim, and if we lie to you, you will recognize our lie as you recognized it regarding our father." the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Who are the people of the Fire?" They said: "We shall be in it for a short while, then you will replace us in it." the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "We shall never replace you in it." Then he said: "Will you be truthful about something I ask you?" They said: "Yes, O Abu al-Qasim." He said: "Did you put poison in this sheep?" They said: "Yes." He said: "What led you to do that?" They said: "We wanted, if you were a liar, to be rid of you; and if you were a prophet, it would not harm you."
