Hadith #219

English Translation

Hajjaj narrated to us, he said: Layth narrated to us, he said: Sa'id narrated to me, that he heard Abu Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه) saying: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent cavalry toward Najd, and they brought back a man from Banu Hanifah called Thumamah ibn Uthal, the chief of the people of Yamamah. They tied him to a pillar in the mosque. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to him and said: "What have you got, O Thumamah?" He said: "I have good, O Muhammad. If you kill, you kill a man of consequence. If you show favor, you show it to one who is grateful. And if you want wealth, ask and you shall be given whatever you wish." the Messenger of Allah ﷺ left him until the next day and asked him the same question. He gave the same answer. He left him again until the day after, then asked him again, and he gave the same reply. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said: "Release Thumamah." They took him to a garden of palm trees near the mosque. He bathed, then entered the mosque and said: "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. O Muhammad, by Allah, there was no face on earth more hateful to me than yours, but now your face has become the most beloved of all faces to me. By Allah, there was no religion more hateful to me than yours, but now your religion has become the most beloved of all religions to me. By Allah, there was no city more hateful to me than yours, but now your city has become the most beloved of all cities to me. Your cavalry seized me while I was intending to perform 'Umrah, so what do you advise?" the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave him glad tidings and instructed him to perform 'Umrah. When he arrived in Makkah, someone said to him: "You have apostatized." He said: "No, rather I have accepted Islam with Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. By Allah, not a single grain of wheat will come to you from Yamamah until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gives permission for it."
