English Translation
Isma'il narrated to us, Ayyub narrated to us, from Nafi', that Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) visited Abu Sa'id (رضي الله عنه) while I was with him, and he said: 'This man has narrated to me a hadith claiming that you narrate it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ regarding gold for gold [exchange].' Abu Sa'id said: 'I only narrate to you what I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. A man came to him with a sa' of good dates. the Prophet ﷺ said: Where did you get this? He said: I traded two sa's for one. the Prophet ﷺ said: Return it! This is the very essence of riba. I did not hear him mention [a prohibition on exchange of] gold or silver, but [he said]: Do not sell gold for gold or silver for silver except like for like and equally, and do not sell any of them absent for present.'
