English Translation
Ibn Abi 'Adiyy narrated from Sa'id, and Ibn Ja'far narrated from Sa'id — the meaning being the same — from Qatadah, from Anas (رضي الله عنه) that the Prophet ﷺ of Allah (عليه الصلاة والسلام) was approached by the tribes of Ri'l, Dhakwan, 'Usayyah, and Banu Lihyan, who claimed they had accepted Islam and sought his aid against their people. the Prophet ﷺ sent seventy of the Ansar to them — we used to call them al-Qurra' (the Reciters), who would gather firewood by day and pray at night. They traveled until they reached the well of Ma'unah, where they were betrayed and killed. the Prophet ﷺ invoked Allah's curse upon their killers for thirty mornings — upon Ri'l, Dhakwan, 'Usayyah, and Banu Lihyan. Anas said: We recited Quran concerning them, then it was abrogated: 'Convey to our people that we have met our Lord; He is pleased with us and has made us pleased.'
