English Translation

'Ali ibn Ishaq narrated to us, 'Abdullah, meaning Ibn al-Mubarak, informed us, Yahya ibn Ayyub informed us, from 'Abdullah ibn Qurayt, that 'Ata' ibn Yasar narrated to him that he heard Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (رضي الله عنه) say: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Beware of sitting in the pathways.' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, we have no alternative; they are our sitting places where we converse.' He said: 'If you must sit, then give the pathway its right.' They asked: 'What is its right, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'Lowering the gaze, refraining from causing harm, returning the greeting of salam, commanding good, and forbidding evil.'
