English Translation

Ibrahim ibn Khalid narrated to us, Rabah narrated to us, from Ma'mar, from al-A'mash, from Abu Salih, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (رضي الله عنه) who said: A group of the Ansar gathered and said: 'He has favored others over us.' This reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he gathered them and said: 'O Ansar, did I not find you astray and Allah guided you through me? Were you not poor and Allah enriched you through me? Were you not divided and Allah united your hearts through me?' They said: 'Allah and His Messenger are more gracious.' He said: 'Will you not respond to me, O Ansar?' They said: 'What shall we respond, O Messenger of Allah? The favor belongs to Allah and His Messenger.' He said: 'Had you wished, you could have said — and you would have spoken the truth and been believed — you came to us rejected and we believed you, defeated and we aided you, expelled and we sheltered you, poor and we provided for you. O Ansar, are you upset about a trifle of this world that I used to win over a people so they might accept Islam, while I entrusted you to your Islam? Are you not pleased, O Ansar, that the people return with sheep and camels while you return with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to your homes? By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, were it not for the Hijrah, I would have been a man of the Ansar. If the people took one path and the Ansar took another, I would take the path of the Ansar. O Allah, have mercy on the Ansar, the sons of the Ansar, and the sons of the sons of the Ansar.' The people wept until their beards were soaked, and they said: 'We are pleased with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as our share and portion.'
