English Translation

Safwan ibn 'Isa and Zayd ibn al-Hubab narrated to us, both saying: Usamah ibn Zayd informed us, from al-Zuhri, from Anas ibn Malik (رضي الله عنه) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came upon Hamzah (رضي الله عنه) and stood over him. He saw that he had been mutilated, so he said: 'Were it not that Safiyyah would grieve, I would have left him so that the beasts and birds would eat of him until he would be raised from their bellies on the Day of Resurrection.' Then he did not pray the funeral prayer over him. He said: Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ vowed to mutilate thirty of the Quraysh if he prevailed over them, and when the Muslims saw the grief of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his anger, they said: 'By Allah, if we prevail over them one day, we shall mutilate them in a manner that none of the Arabs has ever done.' Then Allah revealed: 'And if you punish, then punish with the like of that with which you were punished. But if you are patient, it is better for the patient ones' [16:126].
