English Translation
Waki' narrated to us, al-Hakam ibn 'Atiyyah narrated to us, from Abu al-Makhis al-Yashkuri, who said: I heard Anas ibn Malik (رضي الله عنه) say: It was said: 'O Messenger of Allah, your freed slave so-and-so has been martyred.' He said: 'Not at all! I saw on him a cloak that he had stolen on the day of such-and-such' — meaning he had committed theft from the war spoils.
