English Translation

Waki' narrated to us, Hisham narrated to us, from Qatadah, from Anas (رضي الله عنه) who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to punish for drinking wine with sandals and palm branches. Then Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) gave forty lashes. When it was the time of 'Umar (رضي الله عنه) and people moved to the rural areas and countryside, he consulted his companions and 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf suggested the lightest prescribed punishment, which is eighty lashes. So 'Umar ordered it.
