حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ زَيْدِ بْنِ جُدْعَانَ عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلّ
َمَ مَرَرْتُ لَيْلَةَ أُسْرِيَ بِي عَلَى قَوْمٍ تُقْرَضُ شِفَاهُهُمْ بِمَقَارِيضَ مِنْ نَارٍ قُلْتُ مَا هَؤُلَاءِ قَالَ هَؤُلَاءِ خُطَبَاءُ أُمَّتِكَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الدُّنْيَا كَانُوا يَأْمُرُونَ النَّاسَ بِالْبِرِّ وَيَنْسَوْنَ أَنْفُسَهُمْ وَهُمْ يَتْلُونَ الْكِتَابَ أَفَلَا يَعْقِلُونَ

English Translation
Waki' narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from 'Ali ibn Zayd ibn Jud'an, from Anas (رضي الله عنه) who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'On the night I was taken on the Night Journey, I passed by people whose lips were being cut with scissors of fire. I said: Who are these, O Jibril? He said: These are the khataba [preachers] of your ummah who used to command people to do righteousness while forgetting themselves, though they would recite the Book. Will they not understand?'
