Hadith #155

حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي عَنْ صَالِحٍ قَالَ ابْنُ شِهَابٍ إِنَّ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ قَالَ أَنَا أَعْلَمُ النَّاسِ بِالْحِجَابِ لَقَدْ كَانَ أُبَيُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ يَسْأَلُنِي عَنْهُ قَالَ أَنَسٌ أَصْبَحَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَرُوسًا بِزَيْنَبَ ابْنَةِ جَحْشٍ قَالَ قَالَ وَكَانَ تَزَوَّجَهَا بِالْمَدِينَةِ فَدَعَا النَّاسَ لِلطَّعَامِ بَعْدَ ارْتِفَاعِ النَّهَارِ فَجَلَسَ
رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَجَلَسَ مَعَهُ رِجَالٌ بَعْدَمَا قَامَ الْقَوْمُ حَتَّى قَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَمَشَى وَمَشَيْتُ مَعَهُ حَتَّى بَلَغَ حُجْرَةَ عَائِشَةَ ثُمَّ ظَنَّ أَنَّهُمْ قَدْ خَرَجُوا فَرَجَعَ وَرَجَعْتُ مَعَهُ قَالَ فَإِذَا هُمْ جُلُوسٌ مَكَانَهُمْ فَرَجَعَ وَرَجَعْتُ مَعَهُ الثَّانِيَةَ حَتَّى بَلَغَ حُجْرَةَ عَائِشَةَ فَرَجَعَ وَرَجَعْتُ مَعَهُ فَإِذَا هُمْ قَدْ قَامُوا فَضَرَبَ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَهُ بِالسِّتْرِ وَأُنْزِلَ الْحِجَابُ

English Translation
Ya'qub narrated to us, my father narrated to us, from Salih, Ibn Shihab said: Anas ibn Malik (رضي الله عنه) said: 'I am the most knowledgeable of people regarding the Hijab. Ubayy ibn Ka'b used to ask me about it.' Anas said: 'the Messenger of Allah ﷺ woke up as a bridegroom of Zaynab bint Jahsh. He had married her in Madinah and invited the people to a meal after the sun had risen. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat, and men remained sitting after the women had left. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ got up and left, and I left with him. He walked until he reached the doorstep of 'A'ishah's room, then he thought they had left, so he returned and I returned with him. When we entered, they were still sitting. He turned back again, and I turned back with him, until he reached 'A'ishah's doorstep. Then he returned and they had left. Then the verse of the Hijab was revealed, and a curtain was placed between him and the people.'
