حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ وَالْحَجَّاجُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي شُعْبَةُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ قَتَادَةَ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ أَبِي و حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ عَنْ أَنَسٍ وَالْمَعْنَى وَاحِدٌ أَنَّ أَصْحَابَ النَّب
ِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالُوا لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ يُسَلِّمُونَ عَلَيْنَا فَكَيْفَ نَرُدُّ عَلَيْهِمْ فَقَالَ قُولُوا وَعَلَيْكُمْ و قَالَ حَجَّاجٌ قَالَ شُعْبَةُ لَمْ أَسْأَلْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ هَلْ سَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ أَنَسٍ

English Translation
Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated to us, Shu'bah narrated to us; and al-Hajjaj said: Shu'bah narrated to me, he said: I heard Qatadah narrating from Anas ibn Malik. My father said: Yahya ibn Sa'id narrated to us, from Shu'bah, Qatadah narrated to us, from Anas that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "None of you should wish for death due to a harm that has befallen him. But if he must, let him say: 'O Allah, keep me alive as long as life is better for me, and take my soul if death is better for me.'"
