حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ أَخْبَرَنَا شُعْبَةُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ أَنَّ أَصْحَابَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالُوا
لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ يُسَلِّمُونَ عَلَيْنَا فَكَيْفَ نَرُدُّ عَلَيْهِمْ قَالَ قُولُوا وَعَلَيْكُمْ

English Translation
Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us, Shu'bah informed us, he said: I heard Qatadah from Anas ibn Malik that the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: 'The People of the Book greet us, so shall we return the greeting?' He ﷺ said: "When the People of the Book greet you, say: 'Wa alaykum (and upon you).'"
