English Translation
Hasan narrated to us, Ibn Lahi'ah narrated to us, Abu al-Zubayr narrated to us who said: I asked Jabir about [the Pledge of] al-Aqabah. He said: 'Seventy attended it, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ met them while al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib was holding his hand. They said: O Messenger of Allah, take our pledge.' He said: 'You pledge to me that you will protect me as you protect your women and children.' So they pledged allegiance to him on that. One man — he was one of the youngest — said: 'O Messenger of Allah, we have covenants with these men — meaning the Jews — shall we break them?' the Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled and said: 'Your blood is my blood, your destruction is my destruction. I am of you and you are of me. I fight whom you fight and I make peace with whom you make peace.'
