Hadith #139

English Translation

Ibrahim ibn Ishaq narrated to us, Ibn al-Mubarak narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq — as a reading — Sadaqah ibn Yasar narrated to me, from Aqil ibn Jabir, from Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما) who said: We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the expedition of Dhat al-Riqa'. A man from the Muslims killed the wife of one of the polytheists. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned, her husband swore he would not rest until he shed blood among the Companions of Muhammad ﷺ. He set out following the trail of the Prophet ﷺ. the Prophet ﷺ halted at a place and said: 'Who will stand guard for us?' A man from the Muhajirun and a man from the Ansar volunteered. the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Guard the mouth of the valley.' When the two men went to the mouth of the valley, the Muhajir lay down and the Ansari stood to pray. The man [the enemy] came and when he saw the figure [of the Ansari], he shot him with an arrow. The Ansari pulled it out and continued praying. He shot him with a second arrow, and he pulled it out. Then he shot him a third time, and he pulled it out, then went into ruku and sujud. His companion woke up, and the attacker fled when he saw that they were aware of him. The Muhajir saw the Ansari bleeding and said: 'SubhanAllah! Why did you not wake me the first time he shot you?' He said: 'I was reciting a surah and did not want to stop before finishing it.'
