English Translation

'Abdullah said: I found in my father's book, in his handwriting: Sa'id — meaning Ibn Sulayman — narrated to us, 'Abbad — meaning Ibn al-'Awwam — narrated to us, from Sufyan ibn Husayn, from al-Zuhri, from Ayyub ibn Bashir al-Ansari, from Hakim ibn Hizam (رضي الله عنه) who said: I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, give me.' He gave me. Then I said: 'Give me.' He gave me. Then I said: 'Give me.' He gave me. Then he said: 'O Hakim, this wealth is green and sweet. Whoever takes it with generosity of soul, it is blessed for him. Whoever takes it with greediness, it is not blessed for him — like one who eats but is never satisfied. The upper hand is better than the lower hand.' Hakim said: 'By the One who sent you with the truth, I will never accept anything from anyone after you until I depart from this world.' And he never accepted anything from anyone after that.
