Hadith #1Ungraded

‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏قَرَأْتُ عَلَى ‏ ‏عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ‏ ‏: ‏ ‏مَالِكٌ ‏ ‏وَحَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏إِسْحَاقُ ‏ ‏أَخْبَرَنَا ‏ ‏مَالِكٌ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَعْفَرٍ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏أَبِيهِ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏كَانَ ‏ ‏إِذَا نَزَلَ مِنْ ‏ ‏الصَّفَا ‏ ‏مَشَى حَتَّى إِذَا ‏ ‏انْصَبَّتْ ‏ ‏قَدَمَاهُ فِي ‏ ‏بَطْنِ الْوَادِي ‏ ‏سَعَى حَتَّى يَخْرُجَ مِنْهُ ‏

He (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that i read to 'Abd al-Rahman: Malik — and Ishaq narrated to us, Malik informed us — from Ja'far, from his father, from Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when he descended from al-Safa, would walk until he reached the valley floor, and when he started ascending he would walk briskly until he came out of it.

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ‏ ‏أَخْبَرَنَا ‏ ‏سُفْيَانُ ‏ ‏عَنِ ‏ ‏الْأَعْمَشِ ‏ ‏وَمَنْصُورٍ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏سَالِمِ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏فَقَالَ إِنَّ لِي ‏ ‏جَارِيَةً ‏ ‏وَأَنَا ‏ ‏أَعْزِلُ ‏ ‏عَنْهَا فَقَالَ لَهُ مَا يُقَدَّرْ يَكُنْ فَلَمْ يَلْبَثْ أَنْ حَمَلَتْ فَجَاءَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏فَقَالَ ‏ ‏يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّهَا حَمَلَتْ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏مَا قَضَى اللَّهُ لِنَفْسٍ أَنْ تَخْرُجَ إِلَّا هِيَ ‏ ‏كَائِنَةٌ ‏

'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Sufyan informed us, from al-A'mash and Mansur, from Salim ibn Abi al-Ja'd, from Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما) who said: A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'I have a slave-girl and I need her for service, and I go around the date-palms and pollinate them, and I have relations with her, but I do not want her to become pregnant.' the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Practice 'azl (withdrawal) with her if you wish, for what is decreed for her will reach her.' The man came back after some time and said: 'She has become pregnant.' the Prophet ﷺ said: 'I told you that what was decreed for her would reach her.'

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ‏ ‏أَخْبَرَنَا ‏ ‏سُفْيَانُ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَابِرٍ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏بَعَثَنِي ‏ ‏رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏لِحَاجَةٍ فَجِئْتُ وَهُوَ ‏ ‏يُصَلِّي نَحْوَ الْمَشْرِقِ ‏ ‏وَيُومِئُ ‏ ‏إِيمَاءً ‏ ‏عَلَى ‏ ‏رَاحِلَتِهِ ‏ ‏السُّجُودُ أَخْفَضُ مِنْ الرُّكُوعِ فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ قَالَ فَلَمَّا قَضَى صَلَاتَهُ قَالَ مَا فَعَلْتَ فِي حَاجَةِ كَذَا وَكَذَا ‏ ‏إِنِّي كُنْتُ أُصَلِّي ‏

'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Sufyan informed us, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir (رضي الله عنه) who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me on an errand, and I came back to find him praying facing east, making gestures (bowing and prostrating) while on his riding animal. His sujud was lower than his ruku'.

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ‏ ‏أَخْبَرَنَا ‏ ‏سُفْيَانُ ‏ ‏وَأَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏سُفْيَانُ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَابِرٍ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏أَمْسِكُوا عَلَيْكُمْ أَمْوَالَكُمْ وَلَا تُعْطُوهَا أَحَدًا فَمَنْ أُعْمِرَ شَيْئًا فَهُوَ لَهُ ‏

'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Sufyan informed us — and Abu Nu'aym narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us — from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir (رضي الله عنه) who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Hold on to your properties and do not give them to anyone. For whoever gives a lifelong gift ('umra), it belongs to the one it was given to, living and dead, and to his descendants.'

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ‏ ‏أَخْبَرَنَا ‏ ‏سُفْيَانُ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَابِرٍ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏عَنْ التَّمْرِ وَالزَّبِيبِ وَالرُّطَبِ ‏ ‏وَالْبُسْرِ ‏ ‏يَعْنِي أَنَّ ‏ ‏يُنْبَذَا ‏

'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Sufyan informed us, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir (رضي الله عنه) who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited mixing dried dates with raisins and fresh dates with unripe dates — meaning making nabidh from them together.

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ‏ ‏أَخْبَرَنَا ‏ ‏سُفْيَانُ ‏ ‏عَنِ ‏ ‏الْأَعْمَشِ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَابِرٍ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏إِذَا سَجَدَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَعْتَدِلْ وَلَا يَفْتَرِشْ ذِرَاعَيْهِ افْتِرَاشَ الْكَلْبِ ‏

'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Sufyan informed us, from al-A'mash, from Abu Sufyan, from Jabir (رضي الله عنه) who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'When one of you prostrates, let him be moderate and not spread his forearms on the ground like a dog.'

‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏وَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏مَنْ خَافَ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ لَا يَسْتَيْقِظَ مِنْ آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ ‏ ‏فَلْيُوتِرْ ‏ ‏مِنْ أَوَّلِ اللَّيْلِ ثُمَّ لِيَرْقُدْ وَمَنْ طَمِعَ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ يَسْتَيْقِظَ مِنْ آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ ‏ ‏فَلْيُوتِرْ ‏ ‏مِنْ آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ فَإِنَّ قِرَاءَةَ آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ ‏ ‏مَحْضُورَةٌ ‏ ‏وَذَلِكَ أَفْضَلُ ‏

And he (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whoever among you fears that he will not wake up at the end of the night, let him pray Witr at the beginning of the night, then sleep. And whoever among you hopes to wake up at the end of the night, let him pray Witr at the end of the night, for indeed the prayer at the end of the night is witnessed, and that is better.'

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ‏ ‏أَخْبَرَنَا ‏ ‏سُفْيَانُ ‏ ‏عَنِ ‏ ‏الْأَعْمَشِ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَابِرٍ ‏ ‏عَنِ ‏ ‏السُّلَيْكِ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏إِذَا جَاءَ أَحَدُكُمْ إِلَى الْجُمُعَةِ وَالْإِمَامُ يَخْطُبُ فَلْيُصَلِّ رَكْعَتَيْنِ خَفِيفَتَيْنِ ‏

'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Sufyan informed us, from al-A'mash, from Abu Sufyan, from Jabir, from al-Sulayk, who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'When one of you comes to the Friday prayer while the imam is delivering the sermon, let him pray two rak'ahs and make them brief.'

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏سُرَيْجٌ ‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏حَمَّادٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ زَيْدٍ ‏ ‏عَنِ ‏ ‏الْحَجَّاجِ بْنِ أَرْطَاةَ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏عَطَاءٍ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏قَدِمْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏فَطُفْنَا ‏ ‏بِالْبَيْتِ ‏ ‏وَبَيْنَ ‏ ‏الصَّفَا ‏ ‏وَالْمَرْوَةِ ‏ ‏فَلَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمُ النَّحْرِ لَمْ نَقْرَبْ ‏ ‏الصَّفَا ‏ ‏وَالْمَرْوَةَ ‏

Surayj narrated to us, Hammad — meaning Ibn Zayd — narrated to us, from al-Hajjaj ibn Artah, from 'Ata', from Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما) who said: We arrived with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and performed tawaf around the House and between al-Safa and al-Marwah. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Exit from ihram and make it an 'Umrah.' That weighed heavily on us, and our chests became constricted. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'O people, exit from ihram. Were it not for the sacrificial animal I have with me, I would have done as you are doing.' So we exited ihram and heard and obeyed.

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏سُرَيْجٌ ‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏حَمَّادٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ زَيْدٍ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏عَمْرٍو ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏فَذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ ‏ ‏لِابْنِ عُمَرَ ‏ ‏فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ أَنَا رَأَيْتُ ‏ ‏ابْنَ جَابِرٍ ‏ ‏يَطْلُبُ أَرْضًا ‏ ‏مُخَابَرَةً ‏ ‏فَقَالَ ‏ ‏ابْنُ عُمَرَ ‏ ‏انْظُرُوا إِلَى هَذَا إِنَّ أَبَاهُ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏أَنَّهُ ‏ ‏نَهَى عَنْ ‏ ‏كِرَاءِ ‏ ‏الْأَرْضِ وَهُوَ يَطْلُبُ أَرْضًا ‏ ‏يُخَابِرُ ‏ ‏بِهَا ‏

Surayj narrated to us, Hammad — meaning Ibn Zayd — narrated to us, from 'Amr, from Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما) who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited — then he mentioned that to Ibn 'Umar. A man said: 'I saw the son of Jabir seeking (knowledge) from him.' He said: 'If the son of Jabir was seeking from Ibn 'Umar, then Jabir was more knowledgeable than Ibn 'Umar.'

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏سُرَيْجٌ ‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏ابْنُ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏مُوسَى بْنِ عُقْبَةَ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏يَقُولُ ‏ ‏بَيْنَ الرَّجُلِ وَبَيْنَ الشِّرْكِ ‏ ‏أَوْ الْكُفْرِ ‏ ‏تَرْكُ الصَّلَاةِ ‏

Surayj narrated to us, Ibn Abi al-Zinad narrated to us, from Musa ibn 'Uqbah, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما) who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'Between a man and between shirk (polytheism) — or kufr (disbelief) — is the abandonment of prayer.'

‏ ‏و سَمِعْت ‏ ‏رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏يَقُولُ ‏ ‏لَا ‏ ‏تُبَاشِرْ ‏ ‏الْمَرْأَةُ الْمَرْأَةَ فِي الثَّوْبِ الْوَاحِدِ وَلَا ‏ ‏يُبَاشِرْ ‏ ‏الرَّجُلُ الرَّجُلَ فِي الثَّوْبِ الْوَاحِدِ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏فَقُلْنَا ‏ ‏لِجَابِرٍ ‏ ‏أَكُنْتُمْ تَعُدُّونَ الذُّنُوبَ شِرْكًا قَالَ ‏ ‏مَعَاذَ اللَّهِ ‏

And I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'A woman should not lie with another woman in one garment, and a man should not lie with another man in one garment.' He said: We asked Jabir: 'Did you used to count sins as shirk?' He said: 'We used to count them as kufr.'

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏سُرَيْجٌ ‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏ابْنُ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏عَمْرِو بْنِ أَبِي عَمْرٍو ‏ ‏أَخْبَرَنِي ‏ ‏رَجُلٌ ‏ ‏ثِقَةٌ مِنْ ‏ ‏بَنِي سَلِمَةَ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏يَقُولُ ‏ ‏لَحْمُ الصَّيْدِ حَلَالٌ لِلْمُحْرِمِ مَا لَمْ يَصِدْهُ أَوْ يُصَدْ لَهُ ‏

Surayj narrated to us, Ibn Abi al-Zinad narrated to us, from 'Amr ibn Abi 'Amr, a trustworthy man from Banu Salimah informed me, from Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما) who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'The meat of hunted game is lawful for you while you are in the state of ihram, as long as you did not hunt it yourselves or have it hunted for you.'

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏سُرَيْجٌ ‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏هُشَيْمٌ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏أَبِي بَشِيرٍ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏دَخَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏عَلَى بَعْضِ أَهْلِهِ فَقَالَ هَلْ عِنْدَكُمْ مِنْ ‏ ‏إِدَامٍ ‏ ‏فَقَالُوا لَا إِلَّا شَيْءٌ مِنْ خَلٍّ فَقَالَ هَلُمُّوا فَجَعَلَ يَصْطَبِغُ بِهِ وَيَقُولُ ‏ ‏نِعْمَ ‏ ‏الْإِدَامُ ‏ ‏الْخَلُّ ‏

Surayj narrated to us, Hushaym narrated to us, from Abu Bashir, from Abu Sufyan, from Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما) who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon some of his family and asked: 'Do you have any condiment?' They said: 'Nothing except vinegar.' He said: 'What an excellent condiment vinegar is! What an excellent condiment vinegar is!'

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏سُرَيْجٌ ‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏هُشَيْمٌ ‏ ‏أَخْبَرَنَا ‏ ‏عَلِيُّ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏إِنَّ مَا بَيْنَ مِنْبَرِي إِلَى حُجْرَتِي رَوْضَةٌ مِنْ رِيَاضِ الْجَنَّةِ وَإِنَّ مِنْبَرِي عَلَى تُرْعَةٍ مِنْ تُرَعِ الْجَنَّةِ ‏

Surayj narrated to us, Hushaym narrated to us, 'Ali ibn Zayd informed us, from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, from Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما) who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'What is between my pulpit and my chamber is a garden from the gardens of Paradise, and my pulpit is upon my Hawrd (Pond).'

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏سُرَيْجٌ ‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏مُحَمَّدٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ رَاشِدٍ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ مُوسَى ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏عَطَاءٍ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏كُنَّا نُصِيبُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏فِي مَغَانِمِنَا مِنْ الْمُشْرِكِينَ الْأَسْقِيَةَ وَالْأَوْعِيَةَ فَيَقْسِمُهَا وَكُلُّهَا مَيْتَةٌ ‏

Surayj narrated to us, Muhammad — meaning Ibn Rashid — narrated to us, from Sulayman ibn Musa, from 'Ata', from Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما) who said: We used to acquire slave-girls from the war booty of the polytheists with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and when they were captured, we would practice 'azl (withdrawal) with them.

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏سُرَيْجٌ ‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏أُرِيتُنِي دَخَلْتُ الْجَنَّةَ فَإِذَا أَنَا ‏ ‏بِالرُّمَيْصَاءِ ‏ ‏امْرَأَةِ ‏ ‏أَبِي طَلْحَةَ ‏ ‏وَسَمِعْتُ ‏ ‏خَشْفَةً ‏ ‏أَمَامِي قُلْتُ مَنْ هَذَا يَا ‏ ‏جِبْرِيلُ ‏ ‏قَالَ هَذَا ‏ ‏بِلَالٌ ‏ ‏قَالَ وَرَأَيْتُ قَصْرًا أَبْيَضَ ‏ ‏بِفِنَائِهِ ‏ ‏جَارِيَةٌ ‏ ‏فَقُلْتُ لِمَنْ هَذَا الْقَصْرُ قَالَتْ هَذَا ‏ ‏لِعُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ ‏ ‏فَأَرَدْتُ أَنْ أَدْخُلَهُ فَأَنْظُرَ إِلَيْهِ فَذَكَرْتُ غَيْرَتَكَ فَقَالَ ‏ ‏عُمَرُ ‏ ‏بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَأُمِّي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَوَعَلَيْكَ أَغَارُ ‏

Surayj narrated to us, 'Abd al-'Aziz — meaning Ibn Abi Salamah — narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, from Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما) who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'I was shown entering Paradise, and there I was before al-Rumaysa', the wife of Abu Talhah. I heard footsteps ahead of me and asked: "Who is this?" Jibril said: "This is Bilal." And I saw a palace with a woman in its courtyard. I asked: "Whose is this?" They said: "For 'Umar ibn al-Khattab." I wanted to enter it and look at it, but then I remembered your jealousy, O 'Umar.' 'Umar said: 'May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah! Would I be jealous of you?'

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏سُرَيْجٌ ‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏أَبُو عَوَانَةَ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏أَبِي بِشْرٍ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ قَيْسٍ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏قَاتَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏مُحَارِبَ بْنَ خَصَفَةَ ‏ ‏فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ مِنْهُمْ يُقَالُ لَهُ ‏ ‏غَوْرَثُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ ‏ ‏حَتَّى قَامَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏بِالسَّيْفِ فَقَالَ مَنْ يَمْنَعُكَ مِنِّي قَالَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فَسَقَطَ السَّيْفُ مِنْ يَدِهِ فَأَخَذَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏فَقَالَ مَنْ يَمْنَعُكَ مِنِّي قَالَ كُنْ كَخَيْرِ آخِذٍ قَالَ أَتَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَنِّي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ قَالَ لَا وَلَكِنْ أُعَاهِدُكَ عَلَى أَنْ لَا أُقَاتِلَكَ وَلَا أَكُونَ مَعَ قَوْمٍ يُقَاتِلُونَكَ فَخَلَّى سَبِيلَهُ فَأَتَى قَوْمَهُ فَقَالَ جِئْتُكُمْ مِنْ عِنْدِ خَيْرِ النَّاسِ فَلَمَّا حَضَرَتْ الصَّلَاةُ ‏ ‏صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏صَلَاةَ الْخَوْفِ فَكَانَ النَّاسُ طَائِفَتَيْنِ طَائِفَةً ‏ ‏بِإِزَاءِ ‏ ‏الْعَدُوِّ وَطَائِفَةً صَلَّوْا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏فَصَلَّى بِالطَّائِفَةِ الَّذِينَ مَعَهُ رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَانْصَرَفُوا فَكَانُوا بِمَكَانِ أُولَئِكَ الَّذِينَ ‏ ‏بِإِزَاءِ ‏ ‏عَدُوِّهِمْ وَانْصَرَفَ الَّذِينَ ‏ ‏بِإِزَاءِ ‏ ‏عَدُوِّهِمْ فَصَلَّوْا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَكَانَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ وَلِلْقَوْمِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ ‏

Surayj narrated to us, Abu 'Awanah narrated to us, from Abu Bishr, from Sulayman ibn Qays, from Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما) who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fought against Muharib ibn Khasafah. A man from them called Ghawrath — or his family called him that — came and stood over the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a drawn sword and said: 'Who will protect you from me?' He ﷺ said: 'Allah.' The sword fell from his hand, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ picked it up and said: 'Who will protect you from me?' He said: 'Be a generous captor.' the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Do you testify that there is no god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' He said: 'No, but I pledge to you that I will never fight you, nor be with a people who fight you.' So the Prophet ﷺ released him.

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏سُرَيْجٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ النُّعْمَانِ ‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏أَبُو عَوَانَةَ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏أَبِي بِشْرٍ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏سَأَلَ أَهْلَهُ ‏ ‏الْإِدَامَ ‏ ‏قَالُوا مَا عِنْدَنَا إِلَّا الْخَلُّ قَالَ فَدَعَا بِهِ فَجَعَلَ يَأْكُلُ بِهِ وَيَقُولُ ‏ ‏نِعْمَ ‏ ‏الْإِدَامُ ‏ ‏الْخَلُّ نِعْمَ ‏ ‏الْإِدَامُ ‏ ‏الْخَلُّ ‏

Surayj — meaning Ibn al-Nu'man — narrated to us, Abu 'Awanah narrated to us, from Abu Bishr, from Abu Sufyan, from Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked his family for condiment. They said: 'We have nothing except vinegar.' He called for it and began to eat it, saying: 'What an excellent condiment vinegar is! What an excellent condiment vinegar is!'

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏أَسْوَدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ ‏ ‏أَخْبَرَنَا ‏ ‏إِسْرَائِيلُ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏عُثْمَانَ يَعْنِي ابْنَ الْمُغِيرَةِ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏سَالِمِ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏يَعْرِضُ نَفْسَهُ عَلَى النَّاسِ بِالْمَوْقِفِ فَيَقُولُ ‏ ‏هَلْ مِنْ رَجُلٍ يَحْمِلُنِي إِلَى قَوْمِهِ فَإِنَّ ‏ ‏قُرَيْشًا ‏ ‏قَدْ مَنَعُونِي أَنْ أُبَلِّغَ كَلَامَ رَبِّي عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فَأَتَاهُ رَجُلٌ مِنْ ‏ ‏هَمْدَانَ ‏ ‏فَقَالَ مِمَّنْ أَنْتَ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ مِنْ ‏ ‏هَمْدَانَ ‏ ‏قَالَ فَهَلْ عِنْدَ قَوْمِكَ مِنْ مَنَعَةٍ قَالَ نَعَمْ ثُمَّ إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ خَشِيَ أَنْ يَحْقِرَهُ قَوْمُهُ فَأَتَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏فَقَالَ آتِيهِمْ فَأُخْبِرُهُمْ ثُمَّ ‏ ‏آتِيكَ مِنْ عَامٍ قَابِلٍ قَالَ نَعَمْ فَانْطَلَقَ وَجَاءَ وَفْدُ ‏ ‏الْأَنْصَارِ ‏ ‏فِي رَجَبٍ ‏

Aswad ibn 'Amir narrated to us, Isra'il informed us, from 'Uthman — meaning Ibn al-Mughirah — from Salim ibn Abi al-Ja'd, from Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما) who said: the Prophet ﷺ used to present himself to the people at the Mawsim (the Hajj season at Mina) and say: 'Is there anyone who will take me to his people? For indeed Quraysh has prevented me from conveying the word of my Lord.' A man from Hamdan came and said: 'I will.' the Prophet ﷺ said: 'And will your people protect me?' He said: 'Yes.' Then he feared that his people would let him down, so he came and said: 'I will go to my people, then come to you next year.' the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Yes.' Then Allah sent him the Ansar.

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏هَاشِمُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ ‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏شُعْبَةُ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏مُحَارِبِ بْنِ دِثَارٍ ‏ ‏قَالَ سَمِعْتُ ‏ ‏جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْأَنْصَارِيَّ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏تَزَوَّجْتُ فَقَالَ لِي النَّبِيُّ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏مَا تَزَوَّجْتَ قَالَ قُلْتُ تَزَوَّجْتُ ‏ ‏ثَيِّبًا ‏ ‏فَقَالَ ‏ ‏مَا لَكَ وَلِلْعَذَارَى وَلِعَابِهَا ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏شُعْبَةُ ‏ ‏فَذَكَرْتُ ‏ ‏ذَلِكَ ‏ ‏لِعَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ ‏ ‏فَقَالَ سَمِعْتُ ‏ ‏جَابِرًا ‏ ‏يَقُولُ ‏ ‏قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏أَفَهَلَّا ‏ ‏جَارِيَةً ‏ ‏تُلَاعِبُهَا وَتُلَاعِبُكَ ‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَاهُمَا ‏ ‏أَسْوَدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ يَعْنِي شَاذَانَ ‏ ‏الْمَعْنَى ‏

Hashim ibn al-Qasim narrated to us, Shu'bah narrated to us, from Muharib ibn Dithar, who said: I heard Jabir ibn Abdullah al-Ansari (رضي الله عنهما) say: I married, and the Prophet ﷺ said to me: 'What did you marry?' I said: 'I married a previously-married woman.' He said: 'Why not a young virgin? You could play with her and she could play with you.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I have sisters, and I wanted to marry a woman who could comb their hair and take care of them.' He said: 'You will arrive (in Madinah), so when you arrive, tend to your wife (so that you may have a child).'

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏هَاشِمٌ ‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏شُعْبَةُ ‏ ‏عَنِ ‏ ‏الْجُرَيْرِيِّ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏أَبِي نَضْرَةَ ‏ ‏قَالَ قَالَ ‏ ‏جَابِرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏أَرَدْنَا أَنْ نَبِيعَ دُورَنَا وَنَتَحَوَّلَ قَرِيبًا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏مِنْ أَجْلِ الصَّلَاةِ قَالَ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏فَقَالَ يَا فُلَانُ لِرَجُلٍ مِنْ ‏ ‏الْأَنْصَارِ ‏ ‏دِيَارَكُمْ فَإِنَّهَا تُكْتَبُ آثَارُكُمْ ‏

Hashim narrated to us, Shu'bah narrated to us, from al-Jurayri, from Abu Nadrah, who said: Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما) said: We wanted to sell our houses and move closer to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on account of the prayer. He said: the Prophet ﷺ forbade us and said: 'Your steps (to the mosque) are being recorded for you.'

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏أَسْوَدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ ‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏إِسْرَائِيلُ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي كَرْبٍ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏رَأَى النَّبِيُّ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏فِي رِجْلِ رَجُلٍ مِنَّا مِثْلَ الدِّرْهَمِ لَمْ يَغْسِلْهُ فَقَالَ ‏ ‏وَيْلٌ ‏ ‏لِلْعَقِبِ ‏ ‏مِنْ النَّارِ ‏

Aswad ibn 'Amir narrated to us, Isra'il narrated to us, from Abu Ishaq, from Sa'id ibn Abi Karb, from Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما) who said: the Prophet ﷺ saw on a man's foot a patch the size of a dirham that had not been touched by water. He ﷺ ordered him to repeat his wudu and prayer.

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏أَسْوَدُ ‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏شَرِيكٌ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏سَلَمَةَ بْنِ كُهَيْلٍ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏عَطَاءٍ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَابِرٍ ‏ ‏أَنَّ ‏ ‏رَجُلًا ‏ ‏دَبَّرَ ‏ ‏عَبْدًا لَهُ وَعَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ ‏ ‏فَبَاعَهُ النَّبِيُّ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏فِي دَيْنِ ‏ ‏مَوْلَاهُ ‏

Aswad narrated to us, Sharik narrated to us, from Salamah ibn Kuhayl, from 'Ata', from Jabir (رضي الله عنه) that a man set his slave free upon his death (through tadbir — a conditional emancipation), and he had debts. So the Prophet ﷺ sold the slave to settle the debt of his master.

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏النَّضْرُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الْقَاصُّ وَهُو أَبُو الْمُغِيرَةِ ‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏ابْنُ أَبِي لَيْلَى ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَابِرٍ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏لَا يَمُوتَنَّ أَحَدُكُمْ إِلَّا وَهُوَ يُحْسِنُ بِاللَّهِ الظَّنَّ فَإِنَّ قَوْمًا قَدْ أَرْدَاهُمْ سُوءُ ظَنِّهِمْ بِاللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ‏ { ‏وَذَلِكُمْ ظَنُّكُمْ الَّذِي ظَنَنْتُمْ بِرَبِّكُمْ أَرْدَاكُمْ فَأَصْبَحْتُمْ مِنْ الْخَاسِرِينَ ‏}

Al-Nadr ibn Isma'il al-Qass, Abu al-Mughirah, narrated to us, Ibn Abi Layla narrated to us, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir (رضي الله عنه) who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Let none of you die except while having good expectations of Allah (عز وجل).'

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ‏ ‏عَنِ ‏ ‏الْأَعْمَشِ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَابِرٍ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏يُعَذَّبُ نَاسٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ التَّوْحِيدِ فِي النَّارِ حَتَّى يَكُونُوا حُمَمًا فِيهَا ثُمَّ تُدْرِكُهُمْ الرَّحْمَةُ فَيَخْرُجُونَ فَيُلْقَوْنَ عَلَى بَابِ الْجَنَّةِ فَيَرُشُّ عَلَيْهِمْ أَهْلُ الْجَنَّةِ الْمَاءَ فَيَنْبُتُونَ كَمَا يَنْبُتُ ‏ ‏الْغُثَاءُ ‏ ‏فِي ‏ ‏حِمَالَةِ ‏ ‏السَّيْلِ ثُمَّ يَدْخُلُونَ الْجَنَّةَ ‏

Abu Mu'awiyah narrated to us, from al-A'mash, from Abu Sufyan, from Jabir (رضي الله عنه) who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Some people from the people of Tawhid (monotheism) will be punished in the Fire until they become charcoal in it. Then mercy will reach them and they will be taken out and placed at the doors of Paradise. The people of Paradise will pour water over them, and they will sprout like plants on the banks of a stream. Then they will enter Paradise.'

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ‏ ‏عَنِ ‏ ‏الْأَعْمَشِ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَابِرٍ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏اللَّهُمَّ أَيُّمَا مُؤْمِنٍ سَبَبْتُهُ أَوْ لَعَنْتُهُ أَوْ جَلَدْتُهُ فَاجْعَلْهَا لَهُ زَكَاةً وَأَجْرًا ‏

Abu Mu'awiyah narrated to us, from al-A'mash, from Abu Sufyan, from Jabir (رضي الله عنه) who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'O Allah, any believer whom I have cursed, insulted, or lashed, make that for him a purification and a reward.'

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ‏ ‏عَنِ ‏ ‏الْأَعْمَشِ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَابِرٍ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏مَا الْمُوجِبَتَانِ قَالَ مَنْ مَاتَ لَا يُشْرِكُ بِاللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ شَيْئًا دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ وَمَنْ مَاتَ يُشْرِكُ بِاللَّهِ دَخَلَ النَّارَ ‏

Abu Mu'awiyah narrated to us, from al-A'mash, from Abu Sufyan, from Jabir (رضي الله عنه) who said: A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what are the two decisive matters?' He ﷺ said: 'Whoever dies not associating anything with Allah (عز وجل) enters Paradise, and whoever dies associating something with Allah enters the Fire.'

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ‏ ‏عَنِ ‏ ‏الْأَعْمَشِ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَابِرٍ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏مَنْ غَرَسَ غَرْسًا فَأَكَلَ مِنْهُ إِنْسَانٌ أَوْ طَيْرٌ أَوْ سَبُعٌ أَوْ دَابَّةٌ فَهُوَ لَهُ ‏ ‏صَدَقَةٌ ‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ ‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏الْأَعْمَشُ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَابِرٍ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا الْمُوجِبَتَانِ فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ ‏

Abu Mu'awiyah narrated to us, from al-A'mash, from Abu Sufyan, from Jabir (رضي الله عنه) who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whoever plants a tree and a human, bird, beast, or animal eats from it, it is counted as charity for him.'

'Affan narrated to us, Abu 'Awanah narrated to us, from al-Aswad ibn Qays, from Nubayh al-'Anazi, from Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما) who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Let none of you come to his family at night (unexpectedly).'

'Affan narrated to us, Salim ibn Hayyan narrated to us, Sa'id ibn Mina' narrated to us, from Jabir (رضي الله عنه) who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited muzabanah (selling fresh dates on the tree for dried dates by estimation), muhaqalah (selling unharvested grain for harvested grain), and mukhabarah (sharecropping on a portion of the produce).

'Affan narrated to us, Salim ibn Hayyan narrated to us, Hammad narrated to us, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما) who said: I saw the Prophet ﷺ praying in a single garment, having crossed its ends over each other.

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏عَفَّانُ ‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏حَمَّادٌ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏عَمَّارِ بْنِ أَبِي عَمَّارٍ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏قُتِلَ أَبِي يَوْمَ ‏ ‏أُحُدٍ ‏ ‏وَتَرَكَ حَدِيقَتَيْنِ وَلِيَهُودِيٍّ عَلَيْهِ تَمْرٌ وَتَمْرُ الْيَهُودِيِّ يَسْتَوْعِبُ مَا فِي الْحَدِيقَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏هَلْ لَكَ أَنْ تَأْخُذَ الْعَامَ بَعْضًا وَتُؤَخِّرَ بَعْضًا إِلَى قَابِلٍ فَأَبَى فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏إِذَا حَضَرَ ‏ ‏الْجِدَادُ ‏ ‏فَآذِنِّي قَالَ فَآذَنْتُهُ فَجَاءَ النَّبِيُّ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ ‏ ‏وَعُمَرُ ‏ ‏فَجَعَلْنَا ‏ ‏نَجِدُّ ‏ ‏وَيُكَالُ لَهُ مِنْ أَسْفَلِ النَّخْلِ وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏يَدْعُو بِالْبَرَكَةِ حَتَّى أَوْفَيْنَاهُ جَمِيعَ حَقِّهِ مِنْ أَصْغَرِ الْحَدِيقَتَيْنِ فِيمَا يَحْسِبُ ‏ ‏عَمَّارٌ ‏ ‏ثُمَّ أَتَيْنَاهُمْ بِرُطَبٍ وَمَاءٍ فَأَكَلُوا وَشَرِبُوا ثُمَّ قَالَ هَذَا مِنْ النَّعِيمِ الَّذِي تُسْأَلُونَ عَنْهُ ‏

'Affan narrated to us, Hammad narrated to us, from 'Ammar ibn Abi 'Ammar, from Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما) who said: My father was killed on the day of Uhud and left behind two orchards. A Jew had a debt owed from my father, and the Jew's debt of dates would consume all the produce of the two orchards. the Prophet ﷺ said to the Jew: 'Take the dates from one of the two orchards as your portion.' He refused. the Prophet ﷺ said to me: 'Go and pick the dates.' So I picked them and brought them to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Prophet ﷺ stood among the rows and supplicated. Then he said: 'Call your creditor.' He paid his due in full from one orchard, and the second orchard remained as it was.

Rawh narrated to us, al-Thawri narrated to us, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما) who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ departed (from 'Arafah) with tranquility upon him, and he commanded them to be tranquil. He ordered them to throw pebbles the size of date stones, and he said: 'O people, take your rituals, for I do not know whether I will perform Hajj after this year of mine.'

Aswad ibn 'Amir narrated to us, Abu Bakr narrated to us, from Ajlah, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir (رضي الله عنه) who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to 'A'ishah (رضي الله عنها): 'Have you sent the girl to her husband's house?' She said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Did you not send along with her someone who could sing?' She said: 'No.' the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'The Ansar are a people who love singing. If only you had sent with her someone who would say: We came to you, we came to you, so greet us and we greet you!'

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏النَّضْرُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ أَبُو الْمُغِيرَةِ ‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏ابْنُ أَبِي لَيْلَى ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَابِرٍ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏أَيُّ الصَّلَاةِ أَفْضَلُ قَالَ طُولُ ‏ ‏الْقُنُوتِ ‏ ‏قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَأَيُّ الْجِهَادِ أَفْضَلُ قَالَ مَنْ ‏ ‏عُقِرَ ‏ ‏جَوَادُهُ وَأُرِيقَ دَمُهُ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَيُّ الْهِجْرَةِ أَفْضَلُ قَالَ مَنْ هَجَرَ مَا كَرِهَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَأَيُّ الْمُسْلِمِينَ أَفْضَلُ قَالَ مَنْ سَلِمَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ مِنْ لِسَانِهِ وَيَدِهِ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَمَا الْمُوجِبَتَانِ قَالَ مَنْ مَاتَ لَا يُشْرِكُ بِاللَّهِ ‏ ‏شَيْئًا دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ وَمَنْ مَاتَ يُشْرِكُ بِاللَّهِ شَيْئًا دَخَلَ النَّارَ ‏

Al-Nadr ibn Isma'il Abu al-Mughirah narrated to us, Ibn Abi Layla narrated to us, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir (رضي الله عنه) who said: A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, which prayer is best?' He ﷺ said: 'Prolonged standing (in qiyam).'

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ ‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏عَطَاءٍ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏عَنْ النَّبِيِّ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏أَنَّهُ قَالَ ‏ ‏مَنْ كَانَتْ لَهُ أَرْضٌ فَلْيَزْرَعْهَا فَإِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ أَنْ يَزْرَعَهَا وَعَجَزَ عَنْهَا فَلْيَمْنَحْهَا أَخَاهُ الْمُسْلِمَ وَلَا يُؤَاجِرْهَا ‏

Ishaq ibn Yusuf narrated to us, 'Abd al-Malik narrated to us, from 'Ata', from Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما), from the Prophet ﷺ who said: 'Whoever has land, let him cultivate it. If he is unable to cultivate it and is incapable of doing so, let him lend it to his Muslim brother. Let him not rent it out.'

Ishaq ibn Yusuf narrated to us, Sa'id narrated to us, from Qatadah, from 'Ata' ibn Abi Rabah, from Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'A lifelong gift ('umra) is permissible for its recipient' — or — 'it is an inheritance for its recipient.'

'Affan narrated to us, Salim ibn Hayyan narrated to us, Sa'id ibn Mina' narrated to us, from Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما) who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'My parable and your parable is like that of a man who lit a fire, and the moths and grasshoppers began falling into it, while he tried to keep them away. I am seizing your waistbands to pull you away from the Fire, but you are slipping from my hand.'

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏عَفَّانُ ‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏أَبَانُ الْعَطَّارُ ‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏سَأَلْتُ ‏ ‏أَبَا سَلَمَةَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ‏ ‏أَيُّ الْقُرْآنِ نَزَلَ أَوَّلَ قَالَ ‏ ‏يَا أَيُّهَا ‏ ‏الْمُدَّثِّرُ ‏ ‏قَالَ فَإِنِّي أُنْبِئْتُ أَنَّ أَوَّلَ سُورَةٍ نَزَلَتْ ‏ ‏اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏جَابِرٌ ‏ ‏لَا أُحَدِّثُكَ إِلَّا كَمَا حَدَّثَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏جَاوَرْتُ ‏ ‏فِي ‏ ‏حِرَاءٍ ‏ ‏فَلَمَّا قَضَيْتُ ‏ ‏جِوَارِي ‏ ‏نَزَلْتُ ‏ ‏فَاسْتَبْطَنْتُ ‏ ‏الْوَادِيَ ‏ ‏فَنُودِيتُ فَنَظَرْتُ بَيْنَ يَدَيَّ وَخَلْفِي وَعَنْ يَمِينِي وَعَنْ شِمَالِي فَلَمْ أَرَ شَيْئًا فَنُودِيتُ أَيْضًا فَنَظَرْتُ بَيْنَ يَدَيَّ وَخَلْفِي وَعَنْ يَمِينِي وَعَنْ شِمَالِي فَلَمْ أَرَ شَيْئًا فَنَظَرْتُ فَوْقِي فَإِذَا أَنَا بِهِ قَاعِدٌ عَلَى عَرْشٍ بَيْنَ السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ فَجُئِثْتُ مِنْهُ فَأَتَيْتُ مَنْزِلَ ‏ ‏خَدِيجَةَ ‏ ‏فَقُلْتُ ‏ ‏دَثِّرُونِي ‏ ‏وَصُبُّوا عَلَيَّ مَاءً بَارِدًا قَالَ فَنَزَلَتْ عَلَيَّ ‏ { ‏يَا أَيُّهَا ‏ ‏الْمُدَّثِّرُ ‏ ‏قُمْ فَأَنْذِرْ وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ ‏}

'Affan narrated to us, Aban al-'Attar narrated to us, Yahya ibn Abi Kathir narrated to us, who said: I asked Abu Salamah ibn 'Abd al-Rahman which part of the Quran was revealed first. He said: 'Ya ayyuha al-Muddaththir (O you wrapped in garments).' I said: I was told that the first surah revealed was 'Iqra' bismi Rabbik (Read in the name of your Lord).' He said: I asked Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما) about that, and he said: 'I will only tell you what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ told us. He ﷺ said: "I was secluded in the cave of Hira'. When I completed my seclusion, I descended and was called. I looked to my right and saw nothing, to my left and saw nothing, behind me and saw nothing. Then I looked up and saw something. I went to Khadijah and said: 'Wrap me up and pour cold water on me.' Then Allah (عز وجل) revealed: 'O you wrapped in garments, arise and warn.'"'

Abu Sa'd al-Saghani Muhammad ibn Muyassar narrated to us, Ibn Jurayj narrated to us, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir (رضي الله عنه) who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited muhaqalah (selling unharvested grain for harvested grain), muzabanah (selling fresh dates for dried dates by estimation), mukhabarah (sharecropping), selling fruit before it ripens, and selling except by dinar and dirham — except for 'araya (selling a limited amount of dates on the tree for dried dates).

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ‏ ‏أَخْبَرَنَا ‏ ‏سُفْيَانُ ‏ ‏عَنِ ‏ ‏ابْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَابِرٍ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏جَاءَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏فَبَايَعَهُ ‏ ‏عَلَى الْإِسْلَامِ فَجَاءَ مِنْ الْغَدِ ‏ ‏مَحْمُومًا ‏ ‏فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏أَقِلْنِي ‏ ‏فَأَبَى فَجَاءَهُ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ مُتَوَالِيَةٍ كُلُّ ذَلِكَ يَقُولُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏أَقِلْنِي ‏ ‏فَيَأْبَى النَّبِيُّ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏فَلَمَّا وَلَّى قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏إِنَّ ‏ ‏الْمَدِينَةَ ‏ ‏كَالْكِيرِ ‏ ‏تَنْفِي ‏ ‏خَبَثَهَا ‏ ‏وَتَنْصَعُ ‏ ‏طَيِّبَهَا ‏

'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Sufyan informed us, from Ibn al-Munkadir, from Jabir (رضي الله عنه) who said: A bedouin came to the Prophet ﷺ and gave him the pledge of allegiance upon Islam. The next day he came with a fever and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, release me from my pledge.' the Prophet ﷺ refused. He came again and said: 'Release me from my pledge.' the Prophet ﷺ refused. He came again and said: 'Release me from my pledge.' the Prophet ﷺ refused. The bedouin left, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Madinah is like the bellows — it expels its impurities and purifies its good.'

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏أَسْوَدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ ‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏الْحَسَنُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ صَالِحٍ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَابِرٍ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏لَا يَبِيعَنَّ حَاضِرٌ ‏ ‏لِبَادٍ ‏ ‏دَعُوا النَّاسَ يَرْزُقُ اللَّهُ بَعْضَهُمْ مِنْ بَعْضٍ ‏

Aswad ibn 'Amir narrated to us, al-Hasan — meaning Ibn Salih — narrated to us, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir (رضي الله عنه) who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'A city-dweller must not sell on behalf of a desert-dweller. Leave the people so that Allah may provide for some of them through others.'

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏حُسَيْنٌ ‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏شَرِيكٌ ‏ ‏عَنِ ‏ ‏الْأَشْعَثِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ سَوَّارٍ ‏ ‏عَنِ ‏ ‏الْحَسَنِ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَابِرٍ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏لَا يَدْخُلُ مَسْجِدَنَا هَذَا بَعْدَ عَامِنَا هَذَا مُشْرِكٌ إِلَّا أَهْلُ ‏ ‏الْعَهْدِ ‏ ‏وَخَدَمُهُمْ ‏

Husayn narrated to us, Sharik narrated to us, from al-Ash'ath — meaning Ibn Sawwar — from al-Hasan, from Jabir (رضي الله عنه) who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'No polytheist shall enter this mosque of ours after this year of ours, except the People of the Covenant (those with a treaty) and their servants.'

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏حُسَيْنٌ ‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏شَرِيكٌ ‏ ‏عَنِ ‏ ‏الْمُغِيرَةِ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏عَامِرٍ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏اشْتَرَى النَّبِيُّ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏مِنِّي بَعِيرًا عَلَى أَنْ يُفْقِرَنِي ظَهْرَهُ سَفَرَهُ ‏ ‏أَوْ سَفَرِي ‏ ‏ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ أَعْطَانِي الْبَعِيرَ وَالثَّمَنَ ‏

Husayn narrated to us, Sharik narrated to us, from al-Mughirah, from 'Amir, from Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما) who said: the Prophet ﷺ bought a camel from me on the condition that he would let me ride it for the duration of his journey — or my journey. Then he gave me the camel and its price.

‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏حُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏سُفْيَانُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ عُيَيْنَةَ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏عَمْرٍو ‏ ‏قَالَ سَمِعْتُ ‏ ‏جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏يَقُولُ ‏ ‏كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏فِي غَزْوَةٍ ‏ ‏قَالَ يَرَوْنَ أَنَّهَا غَزْوَةُ ‏ ‏بَنِي الْمُصْطَلِقِ ‏ ‏فَكَسَعَ ‏ ‏رَجُلٌ مِنْ ‏ ‏الْمُهَاجِرِينَ ‏ ‏رَجُلًا ‏ ‏مِنْ ‏ ‏الْأَنْصَارِ ‏ ‏فَقَالَ ‏ ‏الْأَنْصَارِيُّ ‏ ‏يَا ‏ ‏لَلْأَنْصَارِ ‏ ‏وَقَالَ ‏ ‏الْمُهَاجِرِيُّ ‏ ‏يَا ‏ ‏لَلْمُهَاجِرِينَ ‏ ‏فَسَمِعَ ذَلِكَ النَّبِيُّ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏فَقَالَ ‏ ‏مَا بَالُ دَعْوَى الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فَقِيلَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ ‏ ‏الْمُهَاجِرِينَ ‏ ‏كَسَعَ ‏ ‏رَجُلًا مِنْ ‏ ‏الْأَنْصَارِ ‏ ‏فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏دَعُوهَا فَإِنَّهَا مُنْتِنَةٌ قَالَ ‏ ‏جَابِرٌ ‏ ‏وَكَانَ ‏ ‏الْمُهَاجِرُونَ ‏ ‏حِينَ قَدِمُوا ‏ ‏الْمَدِينَةَ ‏ ‏أَقَلَّ مِنْ ‏ ‏الْأَنْصَارِ ‏ ‏ثُمَّ إِنَّ ‏ ‏الْمُهَاجِرِينَ ‏ ‏كَثُرُوا فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ ‏ ‏عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ أُبَيٍّ ‏ ‏فَقَالَ فَعَلُوهَا وَاللَّهِ لَئِنْ رَجَعْنَا إِلَى ‏ ‏الْمَدِينَةِ ‏ ‏لَيُخْرِجَنَّ الْأَعَزُّ مِنْهَا الْأَذَلَّ فَسَمِعَ ذَلِكَ ‏ ‏عُمَرُ ‏ ‏فَأَتَى النَّبِيَّ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ دَعْنِي أَضْرِبُ عُنُقَ هَذَا الْمُنَافِقِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏يَا ‏ ‏عُمَرُ ‏ ‏دَعْهُ لَا يَتَحَدَّثُ النَّاسُ أَنَّ ‏ ‏مُحَمَّدًا ‏ ‏يَقْتُلُ أَصْحَابَهُ ‏

Husayn ibn Muhammad narrated to us, Sufyan — meaning Ibn 'Uyaynah — narrated to us, from 'Amr, who said: I heard Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما) saying: We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a military expedition — they think it was the expedition of Banu Anmar. While we were under the shade of trees, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ hung his sword on a tree branch and we dispersed. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called us, and we found a bedouin sitting in front of him. He ﷺ said: 'This man drew my sword while I was sleeping. I woke up and found the unsheathed sword in his hand. He said to me: "Who will protect you from me?" I said: "Allah." And here he is, sitting.' the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not punish him.
