حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ حَدَّثَنَا الْأَوْزَاعِيُّ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ يَحْيَى بْنَ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ يَقُولُ حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَسْعَدَ بْنِ زُرَارَةَ عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ قَالَ زَارَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي مَنْزِلِنَا فَقَالَ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَرَدَّ سَعْدٌ رَدًّا خَفِيًّا فَرَجَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَاتَّبَعَهُ سَعْدٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَدْ كُنْتُ أَسْمَعُ تَسْلِيمَكَ وَأَرُدُّ عَلَيْكَ رَدًّا خَفِيًّا لِتُكْثِرَ عَلَيْنَا مِنْ السَّلَامِ قَالَ فَانْصَرَفَ مَعَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَمَرَ لَهُ سَعْدٌ بِغُسْلٍ فَوُضِعَ فَاغْتَسَلَ ثُمَّ نَاوَلَهُ أَوْ قَالَ نَاوَلُوهُ مِلْحَفَةً مَصْبُوغَةً بِزَعْفَرَانٍ وَوَرْسٍ فَاشْتَمَلَ بِهَا ثُمّ
َ رَفَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَدَيْهِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ صَلَوَاتِكَ وَرَحْمَتَكَ عَلَى آلِ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَصَابَ مِنْ الطَّعَامِ فَلَمَّا أَرَادَ الِانْصِرَافَ قَرَّبَ إِلَيْهِ سَعْدٌ حِمَارًا قَدْ وَطَّأَ عَلَيْهِ بِقَطِيفَةٍ فَرَكِبَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ سَعْدٌ يَا قَيْسُ اصْحَبْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ قَيْسٌ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ارْكَبْ فَأَبَيْتُ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِمَّا أَنْ تَرْكَبَ وَإِمَّا أَنْ تَنْصَرِفَ قَالَ فَانْصَرَفْتُ

English Translation
Al-Walid ibn Muslim narrated to us, al-Awza'i narrated to us, he said: I heard Yahya ibn Abi Kathir say: Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Rahman ibn As'ad ibn Zurarah narrated to me, from Qays ibn Sa'd who said: 'the Messenger of Allah ﷺ visited us in our home, and he said: "Al-salamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah." Sa'd replied in a low voice.' Qays said: 'I said: "Will you not give the Messenger of Allah ﷺ permission to enter?" He said: "Let him increase his salams upon us." the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said again: "Al-salamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah." Sa'd again replied quietly. Then the third time, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned back. Sa'd went after him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I was hearing your salam but replying quietly so you would increase your salams upon us." the Prophet ﷺ returned with him, and Sa'd ordered a basin of water to be brought. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ bathed, then Sa'd gave him a garment dyed with saffron or wars, and he wrapped himself in it. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his hands and said: "O Allah, let Your blessings and mercy be upon the family of Sa'd ibn 'Ubadah."'
