قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ أَخْبَرَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ حَكِيمِ بْنِ حِزَامٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ الْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنْ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى وَلْيَبْدَأْ أَحَدُكُمْ بِمَنْ يَع
ُولُ وَخَيْرُ الصَّدَقَةِ مَا كَانَ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى وَمَنْ يَسْتَغْنِ يُغْنِهِ اللَّهُ وَمَنْ يَسْتَعْفِفْ يُعِفَّهُ اللَّهُ فَقُلْتُ وَمِنْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ وَمِنِّي قَالَ حَكِيمٌ قُلْتُ لَا تَكُونُ يَدِي تَحْتَ يَدِ رَجُلٍ مِنْ الْعَرَبِ أَبَدًا

English Translation
He (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that ibn Numayr narrated to us: Hishām ibn ʿUrwah informed us, from his father, from Ḥakīm ibn Ḥizām (رضي الله عنه) who said: I heard the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ saying: 'The upper hand is better than the lower hand. Let each of you start with those under his care. The best charity is that given from surplus. Whoever seeks to be chaste, Allāh will make him chaste. And whoever seeks to be self-sufficient, Allāh will suffice him.'
