حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ حَدَّثَنَا أَبَانُ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ بْنِ سَرِيعٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَعَثَ سَرِيَّةً يَوْمَ حُنَيْنٍ فَقَاتَلُوا الْمُشْرِكِينَ فَأَفْضَى بِهِمْ الْقَتْلُ إِلَى الذُّرِّيَّةِ فَلَ
مَّا جَاءُوا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا حَمَلَكُمْ عَلَى قَتْلِ الذُّرِّيَّةِ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّمَا كَانُوا أَوْلَادَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ قَالَ أَوَهَلْ خِيَارُكُمْ إِلَّا أَوْلَادُ الْمُشْرِكِينَ وَالَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ مَا مِنْ نَسَمَةٍ تُولَدُ إِلَّا عَلَى الْفِطْرَةِ حَتَّى يُعْرِبَ عَنْهَا لِسَانُهَا

English Translation
Yūnus narrated to us: Abān narrated to us, from Qatādah, from al-Ḥasan, from al-Aswad ibn Sarīʿ (رضي الله عنه) that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ dispatched a military detachment on the day of Ḥunayn, and they fought the polytheists. The killing spread until they killed children. When this reached the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, he said: 'What is wrong with people that the killing has gone so far as to reach the children?' A man said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, are they not the children of the polytheists?' He ﷺ said: 'Indeed, the best of you are the children of the polytheists! Every soul is born upon the natural disposition (fiṭrah). They remain upon it until their tongues express it, then their parents make them Jews or Christians.'
