حَدَّثَنَا حَسَنٌ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ حَدَّثَنَا زَبَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا سَهْلٌ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ أَمَرَ أَصْحَابَهُ بِالْغَزْوِ وَأَنَّ رَجُلًا تَخَلَّفَ وَقَالَ لِأَهْلِهِ أَتَخَلَّفُ حَتَّى أُصَلِّيَ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الظُّهْرَ ثُمَّ أُسَلِّمَ عَلَيْهِ وَأُوَدِّعَهُ فَيَدْعُوَ لِي ب
ِدَعْوَةٍ تَكُونُ شَافِعَةً يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ فَلَمَّا صَلَّى النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَقْبَلَ الرَّجُلُ مُسَلِّمًا عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَتَدْرِي بِكَمْ سَبَقَكَ أَصْحَابُكَ قَالَ نَعَمْ سَبَقُونِي بِغَدْوَتِهِمْ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَقَدْ سَبَقُوكَ بِأَبْعَدِ مَا بَيْنَ الْمَشْرِقَيْنِ وَالْمَغْرِبَيْنِ فِي الْفَضِيلَةِ

English Translation
Ḥasan narrated to us: Ibn Lahīʿah narrated to us: Zabbān narrated to us: Sahl narrated to us, from his father [Muʿādh ibn Anas al-Juhanī] (رضي الله عنه), from the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ that he commanded his Companions to go on an expedition. A man stayed behind and said to his family: 'I shall stay behind until I pray with the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, then I will ask him for provisions.' So he came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, give me provisions.' He ﷺ said: 'Woe to you! What should I provision you with? Would that the people of Madinah had gone out and not one of them remained behind.'
