حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ حَدَّثَنَا لَيْثٌ عَنْ عُقَيْلٍ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ السُّلَمِيِّ أَنَّهُ قَالَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَرَأَيْتَ أَشْيَاءَ كُنَّا نَفْعَلُهَا فِ
ي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ كُنَّا نَتَطَيَّرُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ذَلِكَ شَيْءٌ تَجِدُهُ فِي نَفْسِكَ فَلَا يَصُدَّنَّكَ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ كُنَّا نَأْتِي الْكُهَّانَ قَالَ فَلَا تَأْتِ الْكُهَّانَ

English Translation
Ḥajjāj narrated to us: Layth narrated to us, from ʿUqayl, from Ibn Shihāb, from Abū Salamah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf, from Muʿāwiyah ibn al-Ḥakam al-Sulamī (رضي الله عنه) who said to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ: 'What do you think about the things I used to do during the pre-Islamic period? We used to practice augury [drawing omens from birds].' He ﷺ said: 'That is something that you find in yourselves; do not let it prevent you [from your affairs].'
