English Translation
Abū Muʿāwiyah narrated to us: al-Aʿmash narrated to us, from Shaqīq who said: Muʿāwiyah entered upon his maternal uncle Abū Hāshim ibn ʿUtbah (رضي الله عنه) to visit him while he was ill. He said: He wept. Muʿāwiyah said to him: 'What makes you weep, O uncle? Is it pain that distresses you or attachment to the world?' He said: 'Neither, but the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ gave me a covenant that I fear I may not have fulfilled. He ﷺ said: Perhaps you will live long enough to acquire much wealth. What should suffice you from this world is the provision of a traveler. And beware of amassing wealth.' He said: 'And here I find that I have accumulated.'
