English Translation
ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us, saying: Maʿmar informed us, from Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr, from Zayd ibn Sallām, from his grandfather who said: Muʿāwiyah wrote to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Shibl saying: 'Teach the people what you heard from the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ.' So he taught them: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: 'Learn the Quran, for when you learn it, do not be excessive in it, do not neglect it, do not eat by means of it, and do not seek to increase [worldly gain] through it.'
