English Translation

Yazīd ibn ʿAbd Rabbih narrated to us: Baqiyyah ibn al-Walīd narrated to us, saying: al-Zubaydī narrated to me, from al-Zuhrī, from al-Sāʾib ibn Yazīd (رضي الله عنه) that there were no storytellers during the time of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, nor during [the caliphate of] Abū Bakr. The first to establish storytelling was Tamīm al-Dārī. He asked ʿUmar for permission, and ʿUmar permitted him.
