English Translation

Wakīʿ narrated to us: Ibn Abī Dhiʾb narrated to us, from al-Zuhrī, from al-Sāʾib ibn Yazīd (رضي الله عنه) who said: During the time of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, Abū Bakr, and ʿUmar (رضي الله عنهما), the adhān for Friday was two calls [the adhān and the iqāmah only]. Then when ʿUthmān (رضي الله عنه) became caliph and the people increased, he added a third call — which was called at al-Zawrāʾ [a marketplace in Madinah].
