English Translation

ʿAlī ibn Isḥāq narrated to us, he said: ʿAbdullāh informed us, he said: Maʿmar informed us, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Kaʿb ibn Mālik, from his father, who said: the Prophet ﷺ arrived — meaning from Tabūk — and when he entered Madīnah, the first thing he did was go to the mosque and pray two rakʿahs in it, then he sat to receive the people. Those who had stayed behind from the expedition came to him, swearing by Allāh and presenting their excuses — and they were over eighty men. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ accepted their outward claims, took their pledges of allegiance, sought forgiveness for them, and entrusted their inner matters to Allāh. Then I came to him, and when I greeted him, he smiled the smile of an angry person.
