حَدَّثَنَا عَتَّابُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا يُونُسُ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ قَالَ أَخْبَرَن
ِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ كَعْبٍ أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ كَعْبٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ كَعْبَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ يَقُولُ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَلَّمَا يُرِيدُ غَزْوَةً يَغْزُوهَا إِلَّا وَرَّى بِغَيْرِهَا حَتَّى كَانَ غَزْوَةُ تَبُوكَ فَغَزَاهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي حَرٍّ شَدِيدٍ اسْتَقْبَلَ سَفَرًا بَعِيدًا وَمَفَازًا وَاسْتَقْبَلَ غَزْوَ عَدُوٍّ كَثِيرٍ فَجَلَا لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ أَمَرَهُمْ لِيَتَأَهَّبُوا أُهْبَةَ عَدُوِّهِمْ أَخْبَرَهُمْ بِوَجْهِهِ الَّذِي يُرِيدُ

English Translation
ʿAttāb ibn Ziyād narrated to us, he said: ʿAbdullāh narrated to us, he said: Yūnus informed us, from al-Zuhrī, who said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbdillāh ibn Kaʿb informed me that ʿAbdullāh ibn Kaʿb said: I heard Kaʿb ibn Mālik say: I was never absent from the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ in any expedition he undertook except at the Battle of Tabūk — though I also stayed behind from the Battle of Badr, but no one who stayed behind from Badr was reproached. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ had only gone out seeking the caravan, and then Allāh brought them together against their enemies without prior arrangement.
