حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ حَدَّثَنَا الْخَطَّابُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ عَنْ خُصَيْفٍ عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ عَنْ جَابِرٍ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا اسْتَقَرَّتْ النُّطْفَةُ فِي الرَّح
ِمِ أَرْبَعِينَ يَوْمًا أَوْ أَرْبَعِينَ لَيْلَةً بَعَثَ إِلَيْهَا مَلَكًا فَيَقُولُ يَا رَبِّ مَا رِزْقُهُ فَيُقَالُ لَهُ فَيَقُولُ يَا رَبِّ مَا أَجَلُهُ فَيُقَالُ لَهُ فَيَقُولُ يَا رَبِّ ذَكَرٌ أَوْ أُنْثَى فَيُعْلَمُ فَيَقُولُ يَا رَبِّ شَقِيٌّ أَوْ سَعِيدٌ فَيُعْلَمُ

English Translation
Ahmad ibn 'Abd al-Malik narrated to us, al-Khattab ibn al-Qasim narrated to us, from Khusayf, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir (رضي الله عنه) who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'When the nutfah (drop of semen) settles in the womb for forty days, Allah sends an angel to it who shapes it and fashions its hearing, sight, skin, flesh, and bones. Then he says: "O Lord, male or female?" And your Lord decrees what He wills, and the angel writes. Then he says: "O Lord, his lifespan?" And your Lord decrees what He wills, and the angel writes. Then he says: "O Lord, his provision?" And your Lord decrees what He wills, and the angel writes. Then the angel departs with the scroll in his hand, and nothing is added to it nor subtracted from it.'
