English Translation

Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah narrated to us, from Hārūn ibn Riʾāb, from Kinānah ibn Nuʿaym, from Qabīṣah ibn al-Mukhāriq al-Hilālī: I took upon myself a debt guarantee (ḥamālah) and came to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ asking him to help with it. He said: 'We will fulfill it for you when the charity comes. O Qabīṣah, begging is not permissible except for one of three: A man who has taken on a debt guarantee — he may ask until he fulfills it, then he stops. A man who has been afflicted by a calamity that consumed his wealth — he may ask until he attains enough to sustain himself. And a man who has been struck by poverty, and three people of understanding from his people attest: So-and-so has been struck by poverty — he may ask until he attains enough to sustain himself. Anything other than that, O Qabīṣah, is unlawful, and its consumer consumes it unlawfully.'
