Muḥammad ibn Bakr narrated to us: Saʿīd ibn Abī ʿArūbah narrated to us, from Qatādah, from Muslim ibn Yasār, from Abū al-Ashʿath al-Ṣanʿānī, from Rāshid ibn Ḥubaysh, that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ entered upon ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit to visit him during his illness. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: 'Do you know who the martyrs of my Ummah are?' The people were silent. ʿUbādah said: 'Prop me up.' So they propped him up and he said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, the patient one who seeks reward.' The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: 'Then the martyrs of my Ummah would be few indeed! Being killed in the path of Allāh عز وجل is martyrdom. Plague is martyrdom. Drowning is martyrdom. A stomach ailment is martyrdom. And the woman who dies in childbirth — her child drags her by his umbilical cord to Paradise.' Abū al-ʿAwwām — the custodian of Bayt al-Maqdis — added: 'And burning and flooding.' ʿAbd al-Ṣamad narrated to us: Hammām narrated to us: Qatādah narrated to us, from a companion of his, from Rāshid ibn Ḥubaysh, from ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit, that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ came to visit him during his illness — and he mentioned the hadith.
