English Translation

Yaʿqūb narrated to me: my father narrated to me: from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq: ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar al-ʿAblī narrated to me: ʿUbayd ibn Jubayr — the freed slave of al-Ḥakam ibn Abī al-ʿĀṣ — narrated to me, from ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr, from Abū Muwayhibah — the freed slave of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ — he said: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ sent me out in the middle of the night and said: 'O Abū Muwayhibah, I have been commanded to seek forgiveness for the people of al-Baqīʿ, so come with me.' So I went with him. When he stood among them, he said: 'Peace be upon you, O people of the graves. Congratulations to you for what you have come to be in compared to what the people are in. If you only knew what Allāh has saved you from! Tribulations have come like pieces of dark night, one following another, the last worse than the first.' Then he turned to me and said: 'O Abū Muwayhibah, I have been given the keys to the treasures of the world and eternity therein, then Paradise, and I have been given the choice between that and meeting my Lord عز وجل and Paradise.' I said: 'May my father and mother be your ransom! Take the keys to the world and eternity therein, then Paradise.' He said: 'No, by Allāh, O Abū Muwayhibah! I have chosen meeting my Lord عز وجل and Paradise.' Then he sought forgiveness for the people of al-Baqīʿ and departed. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ began his illness in which Allāh عز وجل decreed his passing that very morning.
