English Translation
Al-Walīd ibn Muslim narrated to us: al-Walīd ibn Sulaymān — meaning Ibn Abī al-Sāʾib — narrated to me: Ḥayyān Abū al-Naḍr narrated to me, he said: I entered with Wāthilah ibn al-Asqaʿ upon Abū al-Aswad al-Jurashī during the illness from which he died. He greeted him and sat down. Abū al-Aswad took Wāthilah's right hand and wiped it over his eyes and face because of its having pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ. Then Wāthilah said to him: 'One thing I want to ask you about.' He said: 'What is it?' He said: 'How is your opinion of your Lord?' Abū al-Aswad nodded his head, meaning: good. Wāthilah said: 'Glad tidings! I heard the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ say: Allāh عز وجل said: "I am as My servant thinks of Me, so let him think of Me whatever he wills."' Al-Walīd ibn Muslim narrated to us: Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz and Hishām ibn al-Ghāz narrated to me that they heard it from Ḥayyān Abū al-Naḍr narrating it, though they could not match al-Walīd ibn Sulaymān's wording precisely.
