Hadith #266

English Translation

Yaʿqūb narrated to us: my father narrated to us, from Ibn Isḥāq: Hishām ibn ʿUrwah narrated to me, from his father, from ʿUbaydullāh ibn ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUtbah, from Rāʾiṭah the wife of ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd and mother of his children — who was skilled with her hands. She used to spend on him and his children from her craft. She said to ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd: 'You and your children have kept me from giving charity. I cannot give anything in charity.' ʿAbdullāh said: 'By Allāh, I would not like you to do it if there is no reward in it.' So she went to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ and said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, I am a woman with a craft. I sell from it, and neither I nor my children nor my husband have any income other than it. They have kept me from charity and I cannot give anything. Is there reward for me in what I spend?' The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said to her: 'Spend on them, for you will have the reward of what you spend on them.'
