English Translation
Wakīʿ narrated to us, Nāfiʿ ibn ʿUmar al-Jumaḥī narrated to us, from Ibn Abī Mulaykah who said: The two best men nearly perished — Abū Bakr and ʿUmar — when the delegation of Banū Tamīm came to the Prophet ﷺ. One of them suggested al-Aqraʿ ibn Ḥābis al-Ḥanẓalī, of Banū Mujāshiʿ, and the other suggested someone else. Abū Bakr said to ʿUmar: 'You only wanted to oppose me.' ʿUmar said: 'I did not want to oppose you.' Their voices were raised in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ, and the verse was revealed: 'O you who believe, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet ﷺ' [49:2] — to His saying — 'tremendous.' Ibn Abī Mulaykah said: Ibn al-Zubayr said: After that, ʿUmar — and he did not mention that about his father, meaning Abū Bakr — when he spoke to the Prophet ﷺ, would speak like one whispering, so quietly that the Prophet ﷺ could not hear him until he asked him to repeat.
