قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ أَبِي غَرَزَةَ قَالَ كُنَّا نَبِيعُ الرَّقِيقَ فِي السُّوقِ وَكُنّ
َا نُسَمَّى السَّمَاسِرَةَ فَسَمَّانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِأَحْسَنَ مِمَّا سَمَّيْنَا بِهِ أَنْفُسَنَا فَقَالَ يَا مَعْشَرَ التُّجَّارِ إِنَّ هَذَا الْبَيْعَ يَحْضُرُهُ اللَّغْوُ وَالْأَيْمَانُ فَشُوبُوهُ بِالصَّدَقَةِ

English Translation
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mahdī narrated to us, from Sufyān, from Ḥabīb ibn Abī Thābit, from Abū Wāʾil, from Qays ibn Abī Gharazah who said: We used to sell slaves in the marketplace and were called al-samāsirah. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ gave us a name better than what we called ourselves. He said: 'O community of merchants, this selling involves idle talk and oaths, so purify it with charity.'
