English Translation
Abū Muʿāwiyah narrated to us, al-Aʿmash narrated to us, from Shaqīq, from Qays ibn Abī Gharazah who said: We were called al-samāsirah in the time of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ passed by us and gave us a name better than it. He said: 'O community of merchants, this selling involves idle talk and swearing, so purify it with charity.' Yazīd ibn Hārūn narrated to us, al-ʿAwwām ibn Ḥawshab informed us, Ibrāhīm — the freedman of Ṣukhayr — narrated to me, from some of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ who said: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ wanted to forbid a [type of] trade, but they said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, it is our livelihood.' He said: 'Then there shall be no deception.' And we were called al-samāsirah — and he mentioned the hadith.
