English Translation
Sufyān narrated to us, from ʿAmr, from Abū al-Ṭufayl, from Ḥudhayfah ibn Asīd al-Ghifārī who said: I heard the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ — or he said: the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ [said]: 'The angel enters upon the drop after it settles in the womb by forty nights' — Sufyān once said 'or fifty and forty nights' — 'and says: "O Lord, is it wretched or blessed? Male or female?" Allāh تبارك وتعالى speaks, and they write. They say: "What? Male or female?" Allāh عز وجل speaks, and they write. His deeds, his traces, his calamities, and his provision are written. Then the scroll is rolled up, and nothing is added to what is in it nor taken away.'
